Announcements
Dec 23: Hi Everyone: I have two exciting announcements for you!
1. NEXT DEN MEETING - SUNDAY, JAN 3 (3:00 - 5:00) @ Evendale Fire Dept building:
It's hard to believe that our boys only have two den meetings remaining! Our next den meeting will be a special one! Dennis Brown & the Evendale Fire Department have GRACIOUSLY agreed to help our boys with their "Readyman" achievement. (This is exceptionally generous. Please join me in giving them heartfelt thanks when the opportunity presents!)
We are inviting Den 4 (Webelos 1) to join us for this special opportunity, and I encourage your son to attend if possible. (This is a required achievement for the Arrow of Light.) Accordingly, we will be moving the location for our den meeting to the Evendale Fire Dept building. Hope to see you there!
2. SKIING/TUBING WITH BOY SCOUT TROOP 598 - SUNDAY, FEB 21 @ Perfect North Slopes
The local Boy Scouts (Troop 598) are hoping that our boys decide to crossover to their Troop in February. As some of you may already know, they are a very active Troop and enjoy great leadership an amazing assortment of activities. (Recent examples include: camping on a Gettysburg battlefield, summer camp in Ransburg, IN, aviation campouts, etc, etc.)
The troop has invited boys considering Boy Scouting to JOIN THEM for their annual Skiing/Tubing Outing to Perfect North Slopes. Perfect North is offering a discount to the scouts. And parents are also welcome to attend (at no cost) or ski for the same discounted price. See attachment for details and costs. Note: bring a helmet to save the $5 charge.
RSVP by January 5th: Please contact Eric Fortner (Troop 598 parent organizing the event) at 563-4040 or Eric.Fortner@kzf.com
Finally, I'd like to remind you that our next Pack meeting (JAN 23) is the Pinewood Derby. If you don't already have a kit, please let me know.
I look forward to enjoying this Cub Scouting home stretch with you and your boys. And I'm even more excited as we have the opportunity to launch into Boy Scouting!
Dec 5: Per my e-mail, we have one of our last three planned den meetings tomorrow afternoon. (Can you believe that?!) I plan on working on the Engineer Achievement with the boys. We should be doing some fun work with pulleys, marshmallow catapults, electricity, etc. I think it'll keep their attention. <grin>
I regret to inform that I still don't have a firm date on our Readyman (First Aid) work. Recall that there is a Red Cross sponsored option at the end of the year in Blue Ash. However, the Evendale Fire Dept has also stepped up and volunteered to help us. (Perhaps even during one or both of our final den meetings...) I am still working through the logistics with Dennis Brown, and will be sure to give you the plans AS SOON as they are finalized.
Hope to see your boys tomorrow!
Nov 19: We had a great nature hike to Gorman Heritage Farm at our Den meeting on 8NOV. Remember that we've got our annual Turkey Shoot Pack Meeting tomorrow night.
Also, be advised that I'm working with the Evendale Fire department on our Readyman requirement. It appears as if they might have a flexible 2 hour program that can meet our needs. Stand by for more info ASAP!
Oct 28: Per my e-mail, we will be cancelling our 30OCT proposed den meeting due to Halloween scheduling conflicts. Our first den meeting will be 8NOV.
I'm finalizing details with the Cincinnati Red Cross concerning our Readyman training. Expect news soon.
I look forward to seeing you all soon. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Oct 5: What a GREAT time we had at the Archery campout with Evendale's Boy Scout Troop 568!! Each boy scout had taken care to prepare a lesson plan for a portion of the Webelo Outdoorsman achievement and did a super job working on it with our scouts. Of course, the archery was fun, too. <grin>
Thanks Troop 568! You were a terrific host and we look forward to spending more time with your Troop.
Mar 11: Please remember that we have our next Den 2 Meeting at my house tomorrow evening. We'll be finishing up the Geology Achievement. See next column over for more details!
Feb 28: Please remember that we have our next Den 2 Meeting tomorrow afternoon. As you know, it's usually at my house, but I would like to meet at the Trammell Fossil Park instead. Its located in Sharonville and its an easy drive. Here's a map:
Note: Weather.com is forecasting that it will be a high of 38F tomorrow. So, we will cut this meeting short and make it from 3:00 to 4:00. Please dress your son appropriately.
Homework:
* Please have your son read pages 295 through 298 in the handbook - beginning with "Fossils are Fun!"
* Please have your son bring his handbook with him.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Feb15: Please remember that we have our next Den 2 Meeting this afternoon at my house - from 3:00 - 5:00! Per the schedule on our website, Nate will be the Denner (Snacks) and Austin will be the Historian.
We finished up the Craftsman Achievement at our last den meeting, and I intend to be AMBITIOS today! I hope to knock out the ENTIRE Scholar Achievement AND the Chess Belt Loop (if you can believe that) in one fell swoop today! (Wish us luck. <grin>) The boys will get all SORTS of awards at our next pack meeting!
Homework:
None. But please bring your handbooks.
I really look forward to seeing you all later this afternoon.
P.S.: I am hoping to work on the Geology Achievement over the next two den meetings and am considering have our next Sunday meeting at the Trammel Fossil park in Sharonville. (http://www.sharonville.org/fossilpark.aspx) Any thoughts/concerns?
Feb 4: Please remember that we have our next Den 2 Meeting tomorrow evening at my house - from 7:00 - 8:00! Per the schedule below, Matt will be the Denner (Snacks) and Nate will be the Historian (Photographer).
We will be finishing up the Craftsman Achievement during tomorrow's meeting by completing our second wooden project. I intend to get them started - and maybe complete - the Wall Shelf on page 204 of their handbooks.
Homework: See box to the right.
1. Please wear an older sweatshirt tomorrow. We'll likely spend time in my garage on the woodworking project. No need for uniforms.
2. Please have the boys bring gloves and boots or snow-ready shoes Weather permitting, we might have a timed team snow-man building contest at the end of the night to blow off steam.
3. If you've got a coping saw, would you please bring it? I have two already, but I suspect that the cutting will be pretty time consuming. I will make sure that the parent-to-saw ratio is EXTREMELY high and mother-hen the boys while cutting appropriately.
I really look forward to seeing you all tomorrow.
Jan 11: Great time working on our trophy stands today!! I think the boys had fun and learned something, too. In case your son didn't pass along the message:
We left them for you to paint with your son in the event that you might want to use your car's color scheme.
I put that little piece of while molding on the top so that no one get stuck by the exposed & sharp nail. (The nail is used for you to "stick" your derby car on after it's Day of Glory.
There is a small piece of wood (or engraving plate) that you and your son can do to put anything you like on the trophy. Examples include "2009" or the car's name or his place in the race, or whatever you like. Just glue it on once you've painted everything - per the picture on pg 205.
For Friday's meeting we will be working on the leather neckerchief. If your son got to that project during today's meeting, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT HE BRINGS THE INCOMPLETE NECKERCHIEF TO THE MEETING ON FRIDAY.
Also, please remember that the Den meeting will be on FRIDAY night! (We usually meet on Thursday nights, but this is an exception. Thanks!!
Jan 10: We'll do the Craftsman Achievement this month.
Please have your son wear an older sweatshirt to the meeting instead of his uniform. We will likely spend time in my garage and it can get a bit frigid. Over the next two den meetings we will attempt two wood crafts (pg 204 & 205) and a leather craft. The boys will be using some tools - including a coping saw. (I'll make certain that any boy who touches the coping saw is in the proper frame-of-mind beforehand, or it won't happen. Safety first.)
